Preamble
The following principles are premised on the existence of the two components to a research degree only one of which is produced in the traditional print on paper dissertation. The principles focus on that component which is not print on paper.
Principles for the submission, examination and archiving of that component of research degree theses and project work which is not presented as print on paper
- The work (e.g. presentation, performance, exhibition, installation or website) must be recorded in a format which can be lodged in the Library.
- The form of the work shall be set out in the application for admission to candidature if possible. The form of the work should be determined as part of the Master's-by-Thesis or Doctoral Assessment.
- The candidate, supervisor and Responsible Academic Officer shall propose both the timetable and sequence for the examination of the components of the work.
- In the six months before the candidate is ready to have the work – presentation, performance, exhibition, installation or website – examined, the Responsible Academic Officer shall seek approval of the University Graduate School for the form of examination. This may include the candidate meeting the examiners.
- The candidate shall confirm the form of examination approved by the University Graduate School agreed on the Intention to Submit form which is forwarded to the University Graduate School two months prior to the estimated date of submission.
- Where the print component is to be read after the examination of the work, the candidate must normally submit this component no more than six months after the non-print presentation, performance, exhibition, installation or demonstration of the website.
- Normally a closed session of the presentation, performance, exhibition or installation shall be organised by the candidate at his or her own expense.
- The candidate shall be available for thirty to sixty minutes after the presentation to answer questions. This is not to be taken as an oral examination of the content. Rather it is intended to clarify technical points or to remind the examiner of points which may have been missed given the ephemeral nature of the work.
- Each examiner shall provide a report in the usual way. A single report will be provided on all components of the work.
