UTS PUBLICATIONS STYLE GUIDE

There are four ways to shorten words and phrases.

abbreviations

consist of the first couple of letters followed by a full stop

cont.
para.

contractions

consist of the first and last letter with no full stop

dept
Dr

acronyms

consist of a string of initial letters, and maybe a few others, pronounced as a word with no full stops

HECS
Anzac

initialisms

consist of a string of initial letters, not pronounced as a word, with no full stops (initialisms consist of capital letters only)

usage

spell out the word or phrase on first mention, followed by the shortened form in parentheses

use the shortened form on further mentions

Students must sit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. IELTS tests are conducted every week.

it is acceptable to start a sentence with the shortened form

use a combination of the shortened form and 'the centre', 'the department', 'the unit', etc.

The Governance Support Unit (GSU) can help with many things. GSU is located at City campus. The unit is responsible for governance.

if the term is used only once there is no need to provide the shortened form

a or an with acronyms and initialisms

use 'a' or 'an' depending on whether the acronym/initialism begins with a consonant or vowel sound

use an ampersand only if it is part of the official name or trademark

eg

meaning 'for example'

use 'eg' where space is limited (eg in tables, notes and parentheses), otherwise spell out

use a comma before

Students may choose three topics, for example banking, insurance and lending.

abbreviation of 'et cetera' (note the full stop)

use a comma before and try to avoid using in the middle of a sentence

spell out names of states and territories in more formal publications and in publications with an international readership

use the short form if space is limited or to avoid repetition

the abbreviation for Commonwealth is 'Cwlth'
