UTS PUBLICATIONS STYLE GUIDE

There are four ways to shorten words and phrases.

abbreviations

consist of the first couple of letters followed by a full stop

cont.
para.

consist of the first and last letter with no full stop

dept
Dr

contractions

two words made shorter by using an apostrophe in place of some of the letters

didn't know (did not know)
it's time (it is time)
you're right (you are right)

use contractions to make content more conversational, but always consider the context

acronyms

consist of a string of initial letters, and maybe a few others, pronounced as a word with no full stops

initialisms

consist of a string of initial letters, not pronounced as a word, with no full stops (initialisms consist of capital letters only)

usage

spell out the word or phrase on first mention, followed by the shortened form in parentheses

use the shortened form on further mentions

Students must sit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. IELTS tests are conducted every week.

you can start a sentence with the shortened form

use a combination of the shortened form and 'the centre', 'the department', 'the unit', etc.

if the term is used only once there is no need to provide the shortened form

ampersands

don't use an ampersand unless it is part of an official name or trademark

eg

meaning 'for example'

only use 'eg' where space is limited (eg in tables, notes and parentheses), otherwise spell out

use a comma before

Students may choose three topics, for example banking, insurance and lending.

use a comma before and try to avoid using in the middle of a sentence
